What does “Neurodiversity” mean?
Neurodiversity describes a range of conditions which are differences in the way the human brain works; like Autism, Tourettes, Aspergers, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, FASD, ADHD, and others. Importantly, it’s an understanding that these conditions aren’t deficiencies or abnormalities – just differences in the way the human brain can work.
Neurodiverse people think, learn or percieve the world around us in a different way to others. Some things may come more easily, while others may pose more of a challenge. Even within a specific condition like Autism, people can be very different from one another in the way they think, learn, and react.
Some terms we use
It’s important to be able to talk about topics like Neurodiversity openly and honestly. Whether you’re familiar with Neurodiversity or it’s a topic that’s new to you, there are lots of terms and words we use that can be confusing, or can mean different things to different people.
At Brilliant minds, we use some specific terms when we talk about Neurodiversity. First, we use the word “Neurodiversity” to describe any condition that deals with a difference in the human brain. This can include Autism, ADHD, Tourettes, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, and many more. We call someone who identifies as having one of those conditions “Neurodiverse“. When someone doesn’t identify as Neurodiverse, we call them “Neurotypical“.
We work with Neurodiverse people who are looking for great employment opportunities. We call this group of people Neurodiverse Talent, because we believe Neurodiverse people shouldn’t have to settle for just “seeking out any job that will have me”, but can instead find a role that lets their unique talent and capability shine.
Elsewhere, you might hear people use other terms like “Neurodivergent” or “Neurominority” instead of “Neurodiverse”, or other cultural and regional differences. We don’t think there is any one right answer to the language to be used – but we choose to use these terms so we’re consistent when we talk about an important topic like Neurodiversity.
